AASL Standard 1: Use of Information & Ideas |
|
School library media candidates encourage reading and lifelong learning by stimulating interests and fostering competencies in the effective use of ideas and information. They apply a variety of strategies to ensure access to resources and information in a variety of formats to all members of the learning community. Candidates promote efficient and ethical information seeking behavior as part of the school library media program and its services. |
Project: I-Search
Summary: The I-Search is a student chosen topic that ends with a project that the learner uses to express his/her learning through finding, evaluating and summarizing information Doing the I-Search was new way for me to evaluate my own personal style of research and inquiry.
Project: PDEP
Summary: The PDEP is a tool used to help focus the media center's vision and philosophy. The plan must be effective and concise and adhere to the AASL standards. Doing this project gave me strong insight as to how to organize and think broadly about the needs of the media center as how it relates to being the instructional hub of the school.
Project: Order
Summary: An order was completed using the needs assessment that was formed in the PDEP. Doing an oder is a lengthy and time consuming process that requires a well thought out plan that involves the needs of the media center and the instructional staff of the school. Doing this project in a team allowed me to broaden my thinking about the needs of the media center at my school.

School library media candidates model and promote collaborative planning with classroom teachers in order to teach concepts and skills of information processes integrated with classroom content. They partner with other education professionals to develop and deliver an integrated information skills curriculum. Candidates design and implement instruction that engages the student’s interests, passions, and needs which drive their learning.
Project: I-Search Summary: The I-Search is a student chosen topic that ends with a project that the learner uses to express his/her learning through finding, evaluating and summarizing information Doing the I-Search was new way for me to evaluate my own personal style of research and inquiry. Project: Collaborative Unit Summary: Collaboration is key to making the connection between the media center and the classroom teachers and students. By creating an atmosphere of collaboration it encourages students to view the media center as a place that enhances and supports their academic achievement, not just a place to check out books and use the internet. I loved this project so much that it was a stepping stone to my applied project.
